Songs from Clean Bandit, Pharrell Williams and Katy Perry are among the UK’s most streamed tracks of 2014 so far. Plus, Magic! and George Ezra revealed as some of the most streamed singles of the third quarter.
Clean Bandit’s Rather Be is the most streamed song of 2014 so far, the Official Charts Company can reveal. The song, which features rising star Jess Glynne, has been streamed more than 32 million times on services such as Spotify, Deezer, Napster and O2 Tracks.The figure means that Rather Be is now the second most streamed song ever behind Bastille’s Pompeii, which was revealed as the most streamed in June this year when it was announced that audio streams would count towards the Official Chart.
Rather Be – released in January this year – served as the classical-pop quartet’s breakthrough hit after spending four weeks at Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart.
Meanwhile, Canadian rockers Magic! proved the most popular streamed song during the quarter, which runs between July and September. The reggae-pop anthem garnered in excess of 13 million streams during that period, while George Ezra’s Budapest took second place on 12 million. Back on the overall chart, Pharrell Williams holds at Number 2 on the year to date chart with Happy, which sits close behind Clean Bandit on 30 million streams so far this year.John Legend’s All Of Me continues to prove popular well into 2014, climbing to third place on the Official Most Streamed Top 40 on 26 million, and Pitbull’s Timber FT Kesha completes the Top 5 with 21 million streams.
Outside the Top 10, Iggy Azalea climbs 13 places with her Charli XCX collaboration Fancy (18 million streams), and Ed Sheeran is a new entry at 13 with Sing (16 million streams). The song is taken from Ed’s second album X, which is currently the Biggest Selling Artist Album of 2014 so far.
Music fans in the UK have streamed a massive 10.2 billion tracks so far this year, almost double the amount recorded at the same time in 2013 when the tally stood at 5.4 billion. Those using streaming services such as Spotify and Deezer are now playing tracks over 300 million times every week and the Official Audio Streaming Chart Number 1 accounts for over 1 million of those.
